Literature Text

England. 1845.

“I can’t wait to get back home, Mama, Papa,” a twelve year old you beamed at your parents who sat opposite you in the carriage.”I can’t wait to see Pluto and give him his new collar!”

Your mother smiled “I’m sure Pluto will love that.”

Your carriage came to an abrupt stop.

“Are we home already?” You asked as you tried to peek through the window.

“Not yet, honey,” your father’s brow furrowed in worry. “Stay here, you two. I’ll check what happened.”

Your father kissed the top of your head. “Stay here with Mama, okay?”

You nodded your head and watched as your father stepped out of the carriage. You took a seat next to your mother and she pulled you into a tight hug.

“What’s wrong, Mama?” Your brain couldn’t comprehend what was happening.

A gunshot was heard and you almost jumped out of your seat due to the loud noise. Your mother’s grip on you tightened. You looked up to her face, fear written all over it.

The door to your carriage was opened by your coachman. Upon recognizing him, your mother’s grip on you softened.

“Thomas, what ---”

Your mother wasn’t even able to finish her sentence when you suddenly shrieked. Your father was lying lifeless on the ground.  Thomas suddenly grabbed you away from your mother.

“Let her go this instant!” Your mother ordered, tears flowing from her eyes.”Please. Please don’t hurt my baby gi---“

Another gunshot was heard. A man you never saw before just shot your mother. You heard Thomas said something along the lines of “What the hell? The plan was to abduct them not kill them!”

You couldn’t care less. Everything was happening so fast. One moment you’re in a happy family, the next thing you know, they’re dead.

“No, no, no, no... Mama, no...” You couldn’t stop the tears from falling as you watched your mother’s light blue dress stained by her crimson blood.

Your tears clouded your vision. You felt an object hit you at the back of your head. The last thing you saw was your mother mouthing the words “Live  on”, then everything went to pitch black.

You woke up in a dark place, lighted only by few torches in the wall. You tried to walk, only to realize that your right foot was shackled to the wall. You lost track of time. There were no windows that would allow you a glimpse of sunlight.

Every now and then, your former coachman would bring you food and water. Every time he would apologize, saying he was only doing what he’s instructed to do. You didn’t speak to him, though. You couldn’t talk to the man who betrayed your parents.

Every waking moment you would cry. You couldn’t help but remember the life you used to have. But that life was gone, along with your parents. Without you noticing, your tears became less and less until you eventually stopped crying. Your heart – empty.

-----------------

“Hey! Wake up!”

You felt someone unchain your shackled foot.

“Don’t try anything stupid or I’ll kill you, missy.” He grabbed your upper arm tightly and dragged you to a room. He ordered you to change into a simple dress, more decent than the rags they made you wear. After changing, you were once again dragged along the dark seemingly endless hallways. You both ascended in a flight of wooden stairs. The old wood made creaking noises whenever you stepped on them. The man opened a trap door leading outside.

It was night, you noticed. The star shone beautifully under the dark blanket of the sky. After god knows how long, you were able to see them again. You looked around the place and wondered if you were in London. You saw a newspaper on the ground. 1852. So seven years had passed since the tragic event that had befallen your family which make you what? Nineteen?

“Listen to me, missy. Stay here. If you try to run, I will kill you.Understand?” he gripped both of your arms and squeezed tightly, making you winced at the pain. He released your arm. “I have eyes everywhere. Remember that.”

You nodded. People were looking at the both of you. They must have seen you were in trouble but no one dared to help you out. You watched as he walked towards a tall man the other side of the street. The man was wearing a long coat with its collar obstructing your view of his face. They were laughing while constantly throwing glances at your way. After about ten minutes, they shook hands. The tall man gave your captor a bag of that you assume contains money. That’s when you realized, you were being sold.

“Live on”

Your mother’s face flashed into your mind. You had to get out of there. You have to live on.

Just as they were going to cross the street, a carriage passed by, making them stop at their tracks. You used that opportunity to run. You didn’t know where to go. You just ran wherever your feet took you. Your lungs burned, not used to all the running you made. You stopped and panted, hoping to get a little rest.

“There she is! Get her!”

You glanced back and saw three men chasing after you. You panicked and looked everywhere. There seem to be no place where you can go until you saw a black cat staring at you. You ran towards it and saw that it slipped into a narrow alleyway. You followed the alley ‘til you reached a wider space.

“Damn.” You cursed. Dead end. Did you just followed a cat to a dead end? Or did you lost your way because there were no signs of any cat anywhere...

“Got lost, missy?”

You backed up the wall, putting distance between you and the three men. The men approached you slowly, as if delaying the inevitable.

You slumped on the floor. Your face buried in your hand. “This can’t be happening. Stupid cat. Stupid me.” You muttered.

You waited for their hands to touch you yet nothing came. There was only silence.

“If I knew that you’re just going to sit there all day, I shouldn’t have saved your fucking ass.”

You removed your hand from your face. Three lifeless bodies laid on the floor. You turned your head up to the man who helped you. He was significantly shorter than the men who were chasing after you. How on earth did he managed to kill them all.

Noticing you wouldn’t speak anytime soon, he walked over to you. He kneeled to stoop at your level. He lifted your face with his thumb and index finger and tilted your head left and right. He leaned in closer. His head went to the nape of your neck, inhaling your scent. He backed off. Your (color) eyes met his piercing grey ones.

“You’re filthy,” he murmured, as he stood up. “But your soul isn’t.”

“I have a proposal for you, brat. I will protect your goddamned life in exchange for your soul.” He offered his hand to you.

You had nothing to lose. Your life was the only thing you value now. You placed your hand on top of his. You weren’t expecting him to pull you up which made you crashed in to his chest. You looked up to him. He dipped his head slowly. His eyes fixated on your slightly parted lips. His lips hovered lightly over yours. Your ragged breath mixed with his slow deep ones. When he pressed his lips fully onto yours, you were quite surprised to found that they were soft. His hand rested on the small of your back, while the other hand held your chin in place. He pried your mouth open a little, as if trying to sample a taste of your soul.

He pulled back. His once gray eyes changed into dangerously red ones. You couldn’t care less though, you were too busy catching your breath.

He smirked at your attempt to calm your breath.”Do you accept?”

Without second thoughts,  you mumbled, “ I accept.”

“Very well then, brat.” He held your left hand close to his lips. “This will seal our contract.”
