Literature Text

You were in the busy streets of London, walking around, looking at the items that were displayed on the glass windows of the stores, your butler trailing after you. His eyes were trained on you, amazed by how much fun you were having with just looking around. When you were young, your parents would take you here. You enjoyed shopping with them. Your mother would gleefully make you try out multiple dresses and accessories. Dressing you up was some kind of stress relief for her. Your father, on the other hand, didn’t enjoy it much or so you think. He barely bought anything for himself and just watched you and your mother had fun. When you asked him once why he wasn’t getting anything for himself, he just answered that he didn’t need anything and that seeing you and your mother happy was enough for him.

You passed by a store selling glasses and remembered Hanji. You entered the store, wanting to buy something for her. You actually felt bad for leaving her alone.

“Please let me come with you.” Hanji pleaded, her eyes looked like she was going to tear up, her hands gripping your upperarms tightly but not to the point that it hurt.

You wanted her to come but she could be very time-consuming when it comes to shopping –Hanji gets what she needs and stays to look for more. Levi hates that. Levi gets what he needs and leaves. You shifted nervously. “Go ask Levi.”

The moment you said that Levi appeared behind Hanji, a smug look plastered on his face, muttering the word that broke Hanji’s heart. “No.”

And so you left her, mouthing a ‘sorry’  as you watched her waved her goodbye.

An old man was on the counter and he greeted you with a warm smile, asking if you need anything. You told Levi that you were planning to buy Hanji new glasses but unfortunately, you weren’t sure what she needed. Of course he knew. He knew everything. He nodded and proceeded to look through the sets of glasses. You looked around the store. Your eyes fell on a certain thin-framed glasses. You inspected it and a sudden thought came to your mind. You walked over to Levi who was busy examining the glasses the store owner handed him.

“Hey, Levi.”

When he turned to look at you, you shoved the glasses in his face to fit his frame. His eyes momentarily widened in shock and then after a few seconds, they narrowed.

You only grinned at him. “That looks good on you~ We’ll take that, too.”

With a sigh, he removed the glasses and gave it to the old man along with the glasses he picked for Hanji. You thanked the old man before going out the shop. You were happy. You didn’t expect Levi to agree on buying the glasses you picked for him. To be honest, you were just joking around but he really looked great with those glasses on.

“Is there any other place you want to go to?” Levi asked, casting a sideway glance to you.

“Actually, yes,” you answered. “There’s this candy shop but it’s out of the way...”

“Candy? What are you? Twelve?” He tch’ed. “Lead the way.”

He thought it would be troublesome and somehow, he regretted allowing you to go with him. If he was alone, he would be finished by now and he probably would be on his way home or maybe he’s already home. But when he saw your eyes sparkle with delight, a smile seem to be permanently etched on your face, all the trouble seem worth it. Although he wouldn’t admit this and he masked what he’s feeling with a bored expression.

You stopped by in front of a small candy store. It really was out of the way. It was located somewhere in the back of the streets where only few people pass by. A chiming sound was heard as you went inside. Levi fought the urge to wrinkle his nose. His heightened sense of smell couldn’t bear the scent of sweetness inside the shop.

“Miss. How you’ve grown.” An old lady greeted you.

Seeing the familiar face, your smile got even wider, if possible. You used to come here as a kid. This was a place you accidentally found when you got separated from your parents due to a commotion which resulted to people pushing other people. You almost cried, not knowing what to do, but when you saw the little candy shop, with all those colourful sweet stuff, you calmed down. The old lady comforted you too. She even called a police to let your parents know that you were unharmed. Since then, this had been your secret paradise.

“I’ll go get everything I need. You, stay here until I come back.” Levi said, looking at the list on his hand. He moved his gaze to you. He tilted your chin up, his eyes looking straight at yours. “Don’t do anything stupid.”

You nodded dumbly and watched as he walked out of the store. All of a sudden, he was out of your sight.

You heard a chuckle behind you and you turned around to find a man on his mid-twenties. “Was that your butler, miss? Forbidden love of a master and servant. How strange yet so beautiful.”

“Excuse me but who are you?” You’re pretty sure you hadn’t seen his face before.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” He scratched the back of her neck, an impish smile on her face. “I’m the owner’s grandson.”

Grandson. Right, there was one time when the store was closed for a week. When the old lady returned, she explained that her daughter’s child was sick and that she had to assist her daughter on taking care of the poor child.

You returned his smile and then focused your attention to the sugary things on the racks, trying to remember all the fond memories you had with them. You were trying so hard to ignore the man, feeling a little comfortable.

“Miss”

You jerked back, surprised at the sudden closeness of the man’s voice. You didn’t even feel him approaching you, yet here he was only a foot away from you. He raised his hand up to reveal a white cotton pouch. “Here, get one. Complimentary candies from my gran’s secret recipe.”

For a moment, you just stared at the pouch and his pale hand that extends toward you. You hesitantly took one, not wanting to offend him. You stared at the candy on your hand. It was round and red, almost like a cherry.

“Go on, taste it.” he urged you on, his yellow-orange eyes intently trained on your every move.

You put the candy on your mouth, thinking that once it was done, this would be over. The sweet and sour taste of the candy filled your mouth but out of the blue, you felt dizzy. Your hand went to your head, eyes blinking – trying to shake away the blurriness. You fell to the ground, the candy rolling out of your mouth. The last thing you saw scared you – the once cherry-red candy was now black as coal – but your fears were thrown out the window when you heard Levi’s distance voice calling your name. You let your eyes slide close and you succumbed to the darkness.
