A week had passed since the incident. Aside from Levi not giving you a bath anymore, everything seemed pretty normal. You never talked about it, anyway. You just assumed that the slight anger you heard on his voice that day was nothing – that you were just hearing things.

A knock was heard.

“Come in.”

Your butler came in, his gray eyes looking to you through the mirror. “They’ll be here soon.”

You nodded and stood up from the chair. You checked your appearance in the mirror before exiting the room, Levi following you closely.

“Our guest for today is very important. Her comfort is number one priority.” You said as you walked through the corridor leading to your study room.

“No.” Levi stopped walking. You turned, sending him a questioning look. “Your life is always number priority, stupid.”

For a brief moment, you felt your heart swell but then you remembered. It was part of the contract. He was just doing his job.

_____

You realized that every time, there were guests in your manor, Levi seems to change. He would always have a smile plastered on his face. You wouldn’t hear him say any profane words. His work – cooking, gardening, cleaning – was still done with perfection and grace. Yes, he does all of that. He would rather do everything by himself than find someone who would do the job poorly. He also thought that having less people near you would make you safer. Hanji was the only exception. He knew the devotion Hanji has for you and your mother.

Levi opened the door to your study room. He smiled at the guest and let her in. “Lady [Name] has been waiting for you, my lady.”

The girl giggled. “How many times do I have to tell to you to call me Petra, Levi.”

You stared at the girl who just walked in. You almost scoffed when you saw her blushing.

“Alright, then. Petra.”

Great, they’re flirting.
A pang of jealousy hit you. You put your pen down and stood up. Walking to the front of your study desk, you smiled at your guest. “Welcome to the [Last name] Manor, Petra.”

Eventhough you were slightly annoyed at her, you couldn’t let that show in your face. You didn’t want to upset her because 1.) She is the only daughter of a wealthy couple –  business partners that even your parents trusted and 2.) She was a childhood friend.

She beamed at the sight of you, “[Name]!”

She hugged you tightly while you awkwardly hugged her back. You looked at the door, hoping to ask some help from Levi, only to find that he was already not there – making tea, perhaps.

She released you from the hug and looked at you, up and down. “You look so pretty, [Name].”

“So are you, Petra. Please have a seat. You must be tired.” You said, offering her the cushioned chair.

You both sat down and she started talking about what happened to her during the last few years. She didn’t ask about yours. She knew that you were abducted and that you’ve just returned. You mentally thanked her for not prying into your life. You even felt bad that you thought of ripping her head off earlier when you saw her blushing because of Levi.

Levi came back with a food trolley. He poured you and Petra a cup of tea and gave each one of you a slice of lemon meringue pie. He resumed his position behind you as you and Petra began to eat. Petra chatted a little more, casting a shy glance to Levi every now and then. Levi would smile kindly to her in return, making you a little pissed off. You see him every day and very rarely do you see him smile.

Petra brought her teacup down. “I have to say, your tea is the best one I’ve ever tasted, Levi.”

Levi left his position behind you and the next thing you knew, he was in front of Petra. His hand was in her face, lightly rubbing the pie crumbs off her face. Petra’s face was now beet red. She stuttered as she said a small ‘thank-you’. She had her eyes on the floor, not wanting to look at the butler. You cleared your throat to get their attention. Levi bowed slightly and went back to his position.

Petra looked around. She tried to think of something to talk about. “This place hasn’t changed a bit, [Name]. It was how I remembered it when we were kids.”

“I guess so.”

You barely had recollection of your time as a kid. If you were going to be honest, it was like meeting Petra for the first time. You frowned lightly. Becoming aware of your discomfort, Levi changed the subject.

“I heard you like flowers, Lady Petra.” He walked over to Petra and assisted her to stand up. “The rose garden Lady [Name]’s mother took care of is still as beautiful as ever.”

“Really?!” Petra’s eyes brighten. “I want to see. Are you coming with us, [Name]?”

Levi ushered Petra to the door and began to open it... “Unfortunately, she has to finish signing some papers. She’ll join us shortly.”

“Okay then. I’ll see you later, [Name].” Petra walked out of the room. She was too excited that she didn’t notice a small teardrop fell off your face.

Levi ,however, didn’t fail to notice it.

You felt him press a soft kiss on your head but by the time you look up, he was gone.

_____

After signing the papers, you decided to take a walk, as well. Yes, you did sign papers in order to stray away from the thoughts about your childhood.

Not really concentrating on where you were going, you unexpectedly bumped in to Hanji.

“Sorry, I didn’t notice you there. Why are you even standing there?” You looked out the window and searched for what she staring at. “Oh.”

There on the garden was Petra with her arm linked to Levi’s while they were walking. She had a red rose in her hand, given by none other than Levi (you assumed).

Hanji snickered when she noticed the face you were making. “I think someone’s jealous.”

You glared at her, “Well, you thought wrong.”

“If you say so~”

After a long silence...

“It’s just that why can’t he be like that to me?” you suddenly blurted.

Hanji giggled in response, “My lady, believe me when I say this. That man you’re seeing there, that’s not Levi.”

_____

The day went pretty well, you think. Petra mentioned that she would tell her parents how much fun she had and that the [Last name] Company was in very good hands.

Petra’s carriage was waiting for her. She cried as she bid you farewell.

She hugged you and whispered, “You’re very lucky with your butler, [Name].”

You pulled away slightly and gave her a confused look.

She just smiled and hugged you again, “When we were in your mother’s garden, he kept on glancing at your study room’s window. I think he’s worried about you. I can feel that he cares for you a lot.”

Petra was the one who pulled away this time. She wiped some of her tears away. “I’m going to miss you, [Name]. Always send me letters, okay?”

You nodded and returned her smile. “Visit us again, soon.”

_____

You sighed heavily when you felt the softness of your bed in your back. You were pretty tired and just want to get some sleep.

The door to your room opened, revealing Levi holding a candelabra. He does that every night, checking if you’re asleep. Seeing that you weren’t, he sauntered towards the edge of your bed. The flickering light from the candle enhanced the sharp features of his face, making him look more mysterious.

“Thank you.” you whispered.

“Her comfort is number two priority. I was just doing what I was supposed to fucking do.” He replied.

Aaand back with the cussing... Is this the real Levi Hanji was talking about?
You chuckled lightly.

He grimaced, “What are you laughing at, brat?”

“I just remembered something.” You sniggered.

“Hn.” He turned to leave but you immediately sat up and grabbed his hand.

“Wait. Stay here until I fall asleep.”

The request surprised him but nevertheless, he complied. He put the candelabra down on the nightstand as he sat on the stool beside your bed.

This was actually the first time you made physical contact since the incident. He didn’t snatch his hand back though. Unlike the uncomfortable feeling he had when his arm was linked with Petra’s, your hand on his gave a different feeling. He wanted to feel the touch of your skin, but his glove acted as a barrier. He was relieved though, because after what happened last time, his restraint was crumbling.

He was a demon. Hundreds of years he lived and never once, did he worried about something as trivial as emotions.

“Brat.”

“Hm?” Your eyes still closed.

“Don’t soil your face with stupid tears again.”

When he saw you smile, he felt that unfamiliar sensation again, this time stronger. You were already fast sleep, you must be very tired, he thought. He leaned in slowly to your form. Your smell intoxicated him. But just when he was about to feel your lips in his, he stopped and pulled back. He released your hand and hurriedly went to the door. He glanced at you one last time before going out of your room.

He can protect you from the world but can he protect you from himself.
